Visually impaired student in remote BC island completing high school using Nautikos.

Vancouver BC, Canada (PRWEB) June 18, 2003 -- Since kindergarten, Karen Prudhomme has been going to Agnes L. Mathers, the only school on Moresby Island, located in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. Since the school offers primarily K-10 curriculum, she was faced with a hard decision when she entered Grade 11 last year -- that of either having to drop out of high school, or take a long ferry ride to another island nearby to continue her studies. What made this decision particularly tough for Karen is that she is visually impaired, making a long daily commute to an unfamiliar environment highly problematic. That was when her teachers decided to set her up on an independent program that allowed her to take courses, such as English 11 and Social Studies 11, through Odyssey's learning and content management platform Nautikos.

A lot of adjustments needed to be done before we could set Karen up to learn on the computer, but we all rose to the challenge," says teacher Laura Sample. Instead of having Karen work directly on the computer, the staff would either translate the resources and the assignments within Nautikos into Braille, or output them onto paper using large print for Karen. Using Braille, Karen would complete the assignments, which will then be translated back into paper-based text for the teachers to input back into the learning and content management platform. "Nautikos is a great system for learners like Karen who work well alone, and with what we are doing to help her overcome her visual problems, everything seems to be working out fine."

This year has been a challenge for me since Agnes L. Mathers doesn't normally offer Grade 11, but I am confident I can finish my courses by June," remarked Karen. With the right motivation, working on Nautikos can be the easiest way for me to get through school."

What an amazing story this is," observes Tanya Northcott, CEO of Odyssey. Once again, we are inspired to learn of wonderful and caring teachers adapting the delivery of courses through Nautikos to suit a special learner. When we created Nautikos, we wanted to make it the most flexible and adaptable learning system out there. Stories like Karens spur and motivate us at Odyssey as much as they do the people involved in this story. Together, we really can!"
