The Science Advisory Board Hosts a Live Conversation with an Expert on Microbial Genotyping

The Science Advisory Board hosted a live teleconference that joined an in-house team of analysts and a member of The Science Advisory specializing in the field of microbial genotyping.

ARLINGTON, VA (PRWEB) July 7, 2003 -- The Science Advisory Board hosted a live teleconference that joined an in-house team of analysts and a member of The Science Advisory specializing in the field of microbial genotyping. The 30-minute teleconference also featured a brief online presentation of the results from a Science Advisory Board-sponsored study.

An MP3 of the discussion, along with a Power Point presentation, can be accessed through The Science Advisory Boards Website at http://scienceboard.net/snapshotslive/

Listen to this Snapshots Live recording to learn more about the kits, reagents and instrumentation that are commonly used for microbial identification and analysis. Because microbes are so critical to human existence, a great deal of research has centered on finding ways to detect and identify bacteria, viruses, parasites and other microscopic life forms. Despite significant progress, the field of diagnostics has been hindered by the need to culture microbes before they can be identified. Resulting delays in the diagnosis of infections have led to the deaths of many patients from a wide variety of diseases and disorders.

It is estimated that over 95% of microorganisms present in an environmental sample cannot be cultured. Thus, emerging pathogens and new, potentially useful microorganisms may never be identified due to the limitations of culture-based analytical techniques. Epidemiology, agriculture, bioremediation, food safety, forensics and bioterrorism are just some of the fields that promise to benefit from DNA- and RNA-based diagnostic techniques.

Future Snapshots Live events include discussions on clinical proteomics and tissue microarrays. For more information on how to listen in on one of these events and ask questions of scientists working in these fields, please contact Dr. Tamara Zemlo at 703.778.3080 x25 or at t.zemlo@scienceboard.net.
