Everybody can register .name-domains. The top level domain .name is designed exclusively for people's personal names and is dedicated to people. The .name TLD existes solely for individuals and their personal name registrations both as Domains and Email Forwarding. A personal name is a person's legal name or a name by which the person is communly known. A name, by which a person is commonly known, includes, without limitation, a pseudonym used by an author or painter, or a staged name used by a singer or actor.
It could be also a nickname of a pupil or student. Companies are not permitted to register their name. Their is one exception of this rule: Any individual or company can register the .name-domain of a fictional character, if that individual or company has the trademark of this personal name. The domain harry.potter.name would be possible.
The .name-domains are until fall 2003 only available in these forms:
(first name) (last name) .name
(last name) (first name) .name
If John Smith should be unsucessfully attempt to register john.smith.name, he may seek to register john.smith2001.name or john2002.smith.name.
There is a second product availabe: e-mail forwarding. This product has the form (first name)@ (last name).name. An example is john@smith.name. The advantage of this e-mail forwarding is tremendous: Everybody can write an e-mail to you, if your name is known. You must have an existing e-mail box, as the e-mails are forwarded to it. You can only receive e-mails by this address, not send them.
