Expert Father-Daughter Team 'Speaking of Epilepsy' and Traditional Chinese Medicine in a Vancouver Lecture

At a lecture hosted by BC Epilepsy on July 9 in Vancouver, Dr. Changzheng Yu and Dr. Janet Yu will outline the distinctive approach of traditional Chinese medicine to epilepsy.

Whether you are one of the 40,000 people in B.C. living with epilepsy, or simply curious about traditional Chinese medicine, this knowledgeable family duo will educate you about non-traditional approaches to epilepsy in their lecture at BC Epilepsy on Wednesday, July 9th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

As keynote speakers at the July 9 lecture at BC Epilepsy at 120 -- 535 West 10th Avenue in Vancouver, Dr. Changzheng Yu and Dr. Janet Yu will outline the distinctive approach of traditional Chinese medicine to epilepsy. With more than 60 years of experience in traditional Chinese medicine between them, this father-daughter team specializes in pain relief and the treatment of chronic conditions.

A neurologist and professor of traditional Chinese medicine in China, Dr. Changzheng Yu has been a World Health Organization visiting scholar at New York Hospital, spent two years at the Cornell Medical College in New York, and practiced acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in Canada for more than ten years.

His daughter Dr. Janet Yu continued in this family occupation, completing her training in both Western and Chinese medicine before embarking on a career as a certified acupuncturist, college instructor and doctor of traditional Chinese medicine with three clinics in Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam.

The lecture by Dr. Changzheng Yu and Dr. Janet Yu is hosted by BC Epilepsy as part of its Summer Lecture Series 2003. BC Epilepsy is a non-profit society founded in 1959 to provide resources, support, programs and services to people in BC living with epilepsy. BC Epilepsy is very much a community-driven organization," says Pam Gill, Acting Executive Director, and in the last four years our members have emphasized the need for education to demystify epilepsy as well as the desire to connect with other people living with epilepsy."

In response, BC Epilepsy has developed new programming and service initiatives such as Partners in Teaching, which will deliver epilepsy awareness workshops to 457 elementary schools by December, and the Summer Lecture Series 2003. This series will educate both the public and people with epilepsy on the range of healthcare and lifestyle choices available to people living with epilepsy.

BC Epilepsys Summer Lecture Series 2003 features talks on Traditional Chinese Medicine" (July 9), Ask a Neurologist" (July 15), Women and Epilepsy" (July 23), Anti-epileptic Medications" (July 30), Disability Benefits" (Aug 6) and Introducing Reflexology" (Aug 13).

The Summer Lecture Series 2003 will be held at the BC Epilepsy office at 120 -- 535 West 10th Avenue (off Cambie), Vancouver on July 9, July 15, July 23, August 6 and August 13 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Each lecture is $10 for the public and free to BC Epilepsy members and volunteers.
