Fontec Information Technology, Inc. offers an email encryption system for Microsoft Outlook using the Java iButton
Fontec is proud to announce the availability of an email encryption service offering for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, utilizing the Java iButton from Dallas Semiconductor. The iButton is a rugged and durable authentication device similar to a smart card. One wire carries power and data while a second wire is for a ground connection.
Fontec's email encryption system for Outlook is accomplished using the S/MIME email encryption standard. S/MIME uses X509 digital certificates to encrypt and decrypt email. A digital certificate normally resides on a computer's hard drive, but this is insecure. If a computer were stolen or broken into, the burglar would be able to send and receive email using the original user's email keys. This would be similar to leaving one's car keys inside the ignition.
What Fontec does instead is put X509 email certificates directly on an iButton. The advantage of this approach is that the keys are kept outside of the computer. The user can be assured that he or she are the only party that can send and receive encrypted Outlook email.
