Cherryville, PA (PRWEB) July 25, 2003 -- Hit The Trails Publications, LLC, announces the release of a new book by Carolyn B. Cook, "Ride Pennsylvania Horse Trails: Part I--The Eastern Half of Pennsylvania." Thoroughly detailed and well-researched, this excellent resource provides useful information for over 50 equestrian and multiple-use trails throughout the eastern half of Pennsylvania. Though aimed primarily at horseback riders, this extensive reference guide offers many trail suggestions for hikers and mountain bikers.

According to author Cook, information about Pennsylvanias equestrian recreation trails had been sparse and often difficult to locate, "Trying to find a trail required research and the data wasnt in one place. I felt that Pennsylvania trail riders would like a book with lots of relevant information that they could bring along while traveling." She also believed this lack of a comprehensive source of Pennsylvania horse trail information gave many outdoor enthusiasts the mistaken impression that the state had little to offer in equestrian trails. The author, having ridden trails from Maine to the Carolinas, actually shared this impression until she began researching the numerous trails in her own "backyard." She discovered a variety of trails that tapped the states rich history and beautiful, natural resources.

Realizing the need for a single source of information about Pennsylvanias equestrian recreation trails, Cook undertook the task of personally riding and documenting trails in the eastern half of the state. She compiled the results into one handy guide that enthusiasts can carry with them on a trail ride. Black and white photos and sixteen pages of color photos highlight aspects of many destinations and show a glimpse of the authors own experiences on these trails. Each destinations entry is organized by the following characteristics:

--Authors lasting impressions of the destination
--Location of the trails
--Length of the trails
--Level of difficulty
--Terrain description
--Camping facilities available (with and without horses)
--Contact information for obtaining maps and additional destination information
--Activities (available or supported by the destination)
--Fees required
--Permits required
--Comfort station availability (restrooms and water)
--Directions to the destination and trail access
--Trail descriptions
--Historical background and highlights
--Nearby stables, vet services, and farriers

The research for the book required two years and the exploration of hundreds of enjoyable miles by horseback and bicycle. Although the book doesnt cover every trail system in eastern Pennsylvania (a nearly impossible task due to the ever-changing nature of trail systems), Cook provides a generous selection of trails sure to entice riders of every skill level and area of interest. About her expectations, she says, "I hope this book will help trail riders learn about new trails and share some of the great trails Pennsylvania has to offer." She is also writing a companion volume for the western half of the state.

The book retails for $22.95 and can be purchased directly from Hit the Trail Publications, LLC, or from selected tack shops, bookstores, and at various promotional events. Visit the publishers website at http://www.ridepennsylvania.com for more information about online ordering and retail locations. Or write the publisher at Hit the Trail Publications, LLC, P.O. Box 970, Cherryville, PA 18035.

The author, Carolyn B. Cook, has explored trails on horseback for many years with John Spotts, her husband and constant trail companion. Together they have ridden Pennsylvania, the Northeast, and as far west as Wyoming and Colorado. Her articles on trails and trail riding have appeared in The Trail Rider Magazine and other national and local publications. She supports trail development and preservation though her membership and involvement with Rails to Trails and the Pennsylvania Equine Council (PEC).
