Content Management Systems Allow Do-It-Yourself Website Updates for Small Business

How often have small to medium-sized businesses been at the mercy of a website designer or other programmers to make routine content updates on their websites? All too often, and unnecessarily, notes Sonja Gosteli of Globi Web Solutions in Calgary.

(PRWEB) July 26, 2003 -- A Content Management System" (CMS), which allows a small business to update its own website content, is an increasingly popular alternative to the time and expense involved in paying a web designer to do the job. A basic CMS will allow a small or medium-sized business to make changes to predefined sections of text or images--without knowledge of HTML, the code language used by developers to create web page--using a web-based control panel.

Many individually-run organizations and small businesses still feel they have reach into their pocketbook to pay a web designer or developer every time they need to make a change to their content or images. But with A CMS in place, organizations can simply go directly to their administrative interface, type in a password and make the necessary changes themselves," explains Gosteli.

The introduction and evolution of content management systems is arguably as significant as the launch of the first Netscape browser because it continues to change the way organizations develop their content.

Self-updateable solutions are the cats meow for small to medium-sized businesses that either dont have a technical team or dont have the budget to constantly pay developers for updates," says Gosteli. For example, content management systems are ideal for the hospitality industry, with their ever-changing rates and specials. Such organizations can simply go to a special server, type in a password and make the changes themselves."

Gosteli notes that some web designers and developers include content management systems in the websites they design for their clientele; however, this does not appear to be the norm in that many websites continue to publicize outdated information with Under Construction" or Come Back Soon" notices while they wait to obtain the money to afford or have a web designer or developer update their web content.

Content management systems today range in price from under a thousand dollars (as low as a few hundred dollars) for basic updates such as text and photos--ideal for small to medium-sized businesses--to as much as $300,000 or more for enterprise-wide systems that assist larger corporations with updating their databases, e-commerce and other functions.
