Northern Ice Ready to Hit the Field

(PRWEB) July, 2003 -- In Kenosha the weather has been hot and sticky. But August 2nd at noon at Anderson Field there will be a chill in the air. The Northern Ice Women's Professional Football Team will start their first season against the New England Storm.

The Northern Ice is in the WPFL. The oldest, most prestigious of the women's pro football leagues. This is the 5th season for the WPFL, that started off with a barnstorming tour of the US with players from across the country. This year the league has grown to 22 teams as far east as New England and as far west as Hawaii. The Northern Ice plays in the AFC north.

The Northern Ice held tryouts last May in Kenosha and Milwaukee. "We wanted to find the best athletes possible," said Theresa Glass, a CO-owner "and I know we have." Glass and her sister, Theonita Cox are the first African American sisters to ever own a professional sports team of any kind. "This will be a very exciting year, " Glass said, "we wanted to show no matter who you are, that you can achieve anything you dream."

This year's team is a mix of veteran's from the Wisconsin Riveters and rookies just full of talent. Standouts include Elaine Gonya, Jill Jensen, Laurie Ollila, Val Moore, Cindy Herr and Maria Dearth, rookie stand outs are new QB, Petra Olsen, kicker Laurie Ansorge, and Nancy Blaeske.

New head coach, Norman Killion isn't a stranger to football. Killion has been a coach for St. Catharine's HS, Oak Creek HS, Marquette Club football, The Racine Raiders, and professionally in England in the Budwiser league. Games will be broadcast on WRJN 1400. This will be the first time women's professional football will be broadcast on radio or TV.
