The first network, FreeBeeAtlanta, launched this month (June) and offers free internet access to anyone with a wireless enabled laptop or PDA. Covering an area of approximately 6 square miles in Atlantas Buckhead area, a retail and entertainment-rich environment, the service is built on 802.11b wireless network technology. Its primary users are students, young professionals and business travelers, but also captures a more traditional local based business and residential market.
FreeBeeAtlanta carries programming specific to the Buckhead Atlanta area and includes local entertainment and dining information, streaming audio, and news wire content. Supported by advertising the service is presented in the familiar web-browser environment that is fast overtaking traditional broadcast channels as the medium of choice for millions of Americans.

Digital Atlantic, a Virginia-based manufacturer of affordable broadband wireless equipment, is providing products from its Wireless OpticalWare (Wi-O) product line.
