Hon. John Ashcroft
Attorney General
Department of Justice
Sir:
In the U.S. we often pass judgment on people in other countries: Germany, for the Holocaust; Japan, for its war crimes in Asia; Stalin for his purges. We conveniently forget our own past, however. A past in which we enslaved hundreds of thousands of blacks -- beating them, working them in inhumane conditions, and killing them.
Sir, as you are well aware an inquest opened Monday into the lynching of Feraris "Ray" Golden, a 32-year-old black man in Belle Glade, FL. Mr. Ashcroft, this is the second lynching in the South in less than 38 months. According to news reports, relatives claim Mr. Golden was found with his hands tied behind his back.
You can not Lynch Yourself!"
We have had 20 years of freedom of this type of ugly racism. Yet the Bush-Cheny Administration is doing nothing on this matter or the incident of a young boy's lynching death in Kokomo, Miss. Where is the effort to destory the walls of racism?
Mr. Ashcroft, while you may be a conservative, I trust you are not a racist. The Black Community has faith in the Department of Justice. Clearly the Golden case deserves a FBI action. America needs a racial healing!
Thank You,
Mervin Evans
