Trenton, NJ--The latest issue of Out in Jersey Magazine, New Jersey's only state-wide publication for the rainbow / gay community, features an outstanding interview with authors Janet R. Jakobsen and Ann Pellegrini.
Their recent book, Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (NYU Press, ISBN: 0814742645), is a carefully argued study that examine the intensity of America's obsession with sex in the name of values and the dangers that obsession poses to some of our most basic freedoms. With same-sex marriage now on the front burners in New Jersey and Massachusetts, Jakobsen, Pellegrini and Out in Jersey Magazine writer Robert Laczko peer deeply into this simmering pot of fear and control to see just what is cooking in the minds of the American religious fringe.
On the cover this month, Out in Jersey Magazine features New Jersey same sex marriage litigants Saundra Heath-Toby and Alicia Toby-Heath, of Newark, who talk about being black, gay and out in the city where Sakia Gunn was brutally murdered; and on the occasion of the GLBTI community's march in Washington DC with other civil rights groups during the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream Speech, Out in Jersey Magazine presents a portrait of civil rights organizer and gay rights pioneer Bayard Rustin.
There's the usual dollop of fun topping off this issue, with cartoons, dubious advice columns, movie and music reviews, and the indispensable New Jersey Gay Calendar of Events.
Out in Jersey Magazine continues to be available for free at more than 80 clubs and retail outlets throughout New Jersey, but subscriptions are available. For six issues, send a check or money order for $16 payable to Out in Jersey Magazine, 743 Hamilton Ave. Trenton NJ 08629.
