Small firm sells clubs at prices that big boys can't touch.

For the past 3 years, in a modest office building in the warehouse district off Colonial Blvd, owners, Tom Veratti, Brian Terski & Jason Walden carefully plot their strategy for survival. They know their Pole-Kat Golf equipment company may never be the next Callaway, Taylor Made or Wilson. They also know the industry is down 30-40 percent in sales since the start of 1999. But like many owners of small companies, they re-discovered an old rule of business that has seemingly insulated them from the golf retail recession.
Do it right, make it affordable and the sales will keep coming. "We make golf clubs, good quality golf clubs, and sell them at prices much lower than our competitors. It's that simple."

The Pole-Kat company was moved to Fort Myers Florida in 1998. "We can't spend millions on advertising or research like the big companies. What we have to do is understand the trends, know what golfers want, and build and sell it at a cost lower than the big golf companies."

Pole-Kat practices what industry insiders call "niche golf." Pole-Kat Golf is growing buy not trying to compete with Titleist, King Cobra Callaway etc., but rather by providing things those companies can't.
And without the overhead of an industry giant, the niche golf companies can build quality clubs and sell them wholesale to golf shops around the country and make a decent profit.
Callawy may make quality irons such as the X-16 line, but it's $800.00 price tag for a set of eight irons is about $500.00 more than Pole-Kat offers for its popular "Rogue" line. Although the "Rogue 455" line has similarities with the Callaway irons, it's not a knock-off. Jason Walden, VP of Sales, says that "we try to build whatever is the hot product. We have our own designs."
