Number of West Nile Cases in the US Triple in the Last Week

Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 8, 2003 -- According to Dr. Gerberding of the CDC (Center for Disease Control), The number of West Nile cases in the United States has actually tripled since last week, so we are beginning to see a significant uptick in the number of human individuals affected." Sixteen states have reported 153 humans infected with the West Nile Virus which includes 72 from Colorado, 19 from Texas and 15 from Louisiana.

The CDC has officially confirmed four deaths, two in Texas, one in Alabama and one in Colorado and they are aware of other news reports of additional deaths from the West Nile Virus, but are still in the process of confirming them. All of the cases have been attributable to mosquito bites.

This year the median age of people diagnosed, 45 years of age, is slightly younger than last years average of 55. In Colorado the median age is 44 with the youngest being age 3 and the oldest being age 84. The state of Colorado today confirmed 43 more cases of human infection attributable to the West Nile Virus bringing the state total to 154 cases of human infection and 4 confirmed deaths in 3 counties so far this year.

In addition there are already more human cases this year as compared this same time last year. At this time last year Colorado had no human cases of West Nile, whereas this year it is leading the country in the number of cases. Dr. Gerberding states, ...it tells us that we need to really step up the effort to control mosquitoes and to prevent mosquito bites."

The season is upon us. Last year after the end of the first week of August there was a huge increase in the number of cases in the United States. In fact, 65 percent of the cases of the entire season occurred in the subsequent six weeks," says the CDC.

The time for action is now. We need to be really conscientious about taking steps to protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites right now and continue those activities throughout the rest of the summer season. People living in affected areas need to be very aggressive about taking steps to protect themselves.

If you see mosquitoes flying around your skin but theyre not biting you, it means the product you are using is still working. Be very careful about following instructions on the device or the product that youre using; know when you should reapply and how much you should use.

Products available on the market to protect you from mosquito bites are numerous. The most common and one that many of you are familiar with is topical repellant containing DEET. In addition there are a few topical repellants made from all natural ingredients. Some companies offer supplements in tablet/pill form that you take daily to ward off mosquitoes. Also you will find products that control the mosquito population such as Mosquito Magnet, Mosquito Barrier, chemical sprays and citronella products. For those who work in heavily infested areas there are several brands of mosquito clothing and netting. One product that may be unfamiliar to you is the oral spray. One such product on the market today is Famous Formula 27 an anti-mosquito oral spray (www.famousformula27.com) that works through your blood stream to keep mosquitoes from biting.

Protect yourself now as West Nile season is upon us.
