Concert to Benefit Massachusetts Rape Crisis Centers and National Hotline

BOSTON, MA (PRWEB) August, 2003 -- Rock for RAINN: A Benefit to Unlock the Silence will be held September 25, 2003, 7:30pm - Midnight at The Matrix at the Roxyplex, 279 Tremont St., Boston, MA. Proceeds will be donated to The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) and the Save Massachusetts Rape Crisis Centers Campaign organized by Jane Doe Inc.. The show is open to all ages.

RAINN, a nonprofit organization, operates America's only national hotline for victims of sexual assault and was named one of Americas top 100 charities by Worth Magazine. According to the US Department of Justices 2001 National Crime Victimization Survey, an individual is sexually assaulted every two minutes in America -- thats 30 people an hour, 715 people a day. And while most rape victims are women, 1 in 10 victims are male, and 1 in 6 victims are children.

The hotline (800.656.HOPE) offers free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1994, RAINN has helped more than 600,000 victims of sexual assault. RAINN estimates that 9,865 people a month call the RAINN hotline for help. The hotline is funded entirely by individuals, corporations, and foundations and receives no government funding. Of every dollar donated, 88¢ goes directly to helping victims.

The Save Massachusetts Rape Crisis Centers Campaign seeks to raise much needed funding that was cut from the State budget. Massachusetts Fiscal Year 2004 Budget eliminates a staggering 75% of public funding for rape crisis centers and sexual assault services in Massachusetts. The State Conference Committee budget cut these funds from approximately $2.5 million to $800,000. As a result, 13 of 18 Rape Crisis Centers may be forced to close, leaving only 5 Rape Crisis Centers with curtailed services in the state for thousands of sexual assault victims.
