(PRWEB) August 15, 2003 -- John C. Lungren Jr., son of the late John C. Lungren, MD will speak about their collaboration and what he discovered as he and his father wrote Healing Richard Nixon: A Doctor's Memoir. Published by University Press of Kentucky, Dr. Lungren explores Nixon as he knew him for over 40 years as personal physician and confidante.
Dr. Lungren became a campaign physician during Nixons 1952 vice-presidential bid, and their close relationship, both personal and professional, endured until Nixons death over forty years later. After Watergate, Nixon made a personal plea to his old friend and physician: I want you to take care of me because I trust you and I know you wouldnt want anything from me."
Lungren assumed the responsibility of caring for Nixon -- unaware that his own motives, methods, and decisions would ultimately arouse national criticism. Lungren cared for Nixon through two intensive hospitalizations, including an advanced case of phlebitis in Nixons left leg and a near-fatal vascular collapse. Along the way, Lungren shielded the ailing Nixon from tenacious reporters and federal prosecutors, confident that his actions were saving Nixon from certain death.
The Sunday afternoon (1:30 PM) program will include remarks by Dan Lungren, also the son of Dr. Lungren and former Attorney General of California; Herb Klein, Nixon press secretary, White House Communications Director and Editor-in-Chief of Copley newspapers; Rick Perlstein, political journalist who wrote the book's "foreword"; and Nixon Library Director John Taylor.
The presentation will take place at the Nixon Library & Birthplace, 18001 Yorba Linda Boulevard, Yorba Linda, California. A reception and book signing will follow the program. C-Span will cover the event.
