ABOUT ALAN MILLER

New York City- August 18, 2003-- Alan Miller's images are provocative, striking, simple and beautiful. The usage of infrared and black-and-white film in his work is distinguished. The blackest blacks are full of depth and tiny nuances. His compositions, is as much about the subject that fills the space as it is about the negative space.

Alan has a remarkable ability to capture textures and incorporate them into images to make the photograph whole. The organic shapes of his nudes to his landscapes and commercial work captures a modern look on a timeless theme. "Photographers are recording our culture and projecting our images unlike anytime in history," stated Alan in a recent interview.

His portraits capture a totally different lifescape. They are about the mystery and life's drama. Yet, his subjects seem to be quite comfortable around him and allow him into their private world. They are very up-close and personal.

"Photographers take pictures with cameras, Alan makes photographs with his imagination. The first time I saw one of his photographs, it hit me as though I had been struck by lightning and with almost as much voltage. A classic image-maker. Alan researches studies and brainstorms about his images tirelessly. He works harder than everyone else does. That's why his images are what they are. Plain and simple, a work of art." said John Alderman of John Alderman Studios.

"It is essential to my existence that I do something related to my photography daily. If the business of photography interferes, it's as though I've neglected something. Yet, I don't like to speak too much about the work. Too many viewpoints as too many words spoil the mystery in the pictures. I just like the connections and juxtapositions that reflect our culture. Hopefully, the direct appeal of my work does not try too hard. As the voice of the images stand still and ask only, that we stop and look," said Alan.

Yet the message comes through. Alan Miller's photographs do tell a story. Even if the model or landscape that Alan photographs lacks a physical voice, a voice appears with it's own timbre. A tale is then told. Those tales can be comedies, light verse or fending off the farce that dances around us. That is one of the reasons Alan is using his Alanworks website. To give voice to the images that smile in the shadows, dances in the light or creates a mystery just behind the eyes.
