Tom-A-Palooza II: A Political Comedy Fun(d)raiser for Tom Ammiano (for SF Mayor)

San Francisco Bay Area comedians are once again coming out in support of fellow stand-up comic, Board of Supervisors member, and Mayoral candidate, Tom Ammiano, as they did at the first Tom-A-Palooza mayoral comedy fundraiser in 1999. The openly gay Ammiano had entered that race as a last-minute write-in candidate for Mayor in December of 1999 and garnered 40% of the vote, pushing incumbent mayor, Willie Brown, into an unexpected run-off election. Ammiano accomplished all that on a grassroots political campaign budget of $25,000 ($10,000 of which was raised by Tom-A-Palooza I) compared to Browns $5 million.

Fast forward to 2003, with Willie Brown-appointee and Getty protégé Gavin Newsom, the most politically conservative of the candidates, vying for the office of Mayor amidst a crowded field of other contenders (but not nearly as many as the governor's race).
