HARLEM BOOK FAIR ON LONG ISLAND, AUTHORS RECEPTION AND PANEL DISCUSSION TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 19-20, AT THE
FREEPORT RECREATION CENTER

(PRWEB) August, 2003 -- On Saturday, September 20, 2003, the Long Island Partnership for Community Education and the African Atlantic Genealogical Society will be hosting the Harlem Book Fair on Long Island. The book fair was established in Harlem in 1998, by Max Rodriguez, publisher of QBR the Black Book Review.

It has been held annually in Harlem, New York City, for five years. Other venues have been established in cities across the country (i.e.) Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; etc. We are establishing Long Island as an additional venue in an effort to promote community education, literary arts and literacy.

The book fair will take place outdoors, from noon until 6:00 p.m., at the Freeport Recreation Center, 130 East Merrick Road, Freeport NY. In case of inclement weather, it will be held in the recreation centers gymnasium. Vendor spaces are available at $75 per space. Story-tellers, clowns, face-painters and a balloon-twister will entertain the children.

During the week preceding the book fair, authors will be going into local schools to read to the younger students and discuss literature and writing with older students.

On Thursday, September 17th, at 6:00 p.m., a play for children, Barefoot", will be performed by Arts in Motion, at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 West Merrick Road, Freeport.

There will be three panel discussions in connection with the book fair. The first will be held on Friday, September 19th, at 1:00 p.m., at the African American Museum of Nassau County, 110 North Franklin Street, Hempstead NY. On Saturday, September 20th, at the recreation center, concurrent with the book fair there will be two panel discussions.

The first discussion will begin at 2:00 p.m., the second at 3:30 p.m. (Schedule of discussions and panelists attached). Participants are available for media interviews.

On Friday, September 19th, an Authors Reception will be held in the Mezzanine Lounge at the recreation center, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Twenty authors will be in attendance. Light refreshment will be served and the entertainment will include poetry, musical performances and dancing. Tickets are $45.00 per person. Visa and MasterCard accepted.

The hosting of the Harlem Book Fair on Long Island is made possible by the support of the Nassau County Consortium, the Incorporated Village of Freeport, the Freeport School District, the Arts Council at Freeport, and the Freeport Memorial Library,
