M-DCC CULTURA DEL LOBO SERIES PRESENTS: REY PARLA, AVANT-GARDE FILMMAKER
Miami, FL (PRWEB) August, 2003 -- Continuing with a commitment to present the newest, most challenging contemporary and culturally specific work being created in the United States and abroad, the Miami-Dade Community College Cultura del Lobo Performance Series presents a screening of Rumba Abstracta, a visionary experimental film by South Florida artist Rey Parla. The film screening will take place as part of the programming for the Festival de Cine Alternativo Cubano.
Rey Parla (b. 1971) is a self-taught filmmaker. The Alliance For Media Arts in Miami Beach recognized Mr. Parla as one of the best and most interesting scratch" filmmakers in the country in 1997. Rey Parla has been uncompromising in his practice of first-person filmmaking as a means of adding to the secrets" of human existence.
Born in 1971 in Miami, Florida, Parla completed his first moving picture in 1994, titled: Sporadic Germination. During an intense production period between 1994-97 Parla completed several Super 8, 16mm and 35mm films, some being destroyed by a hungry projector." His films take up to six months or years of production and range in length of seconds to several minutes.
Parla does not reject narrative and in 2000 he and friend Ralph Falcon of Murk Films completed a Miami story narrative titled: Diablo, which began its world premiere at The Milano International Film Festival and also won third place on ifilm.com during 2001 as one of the best short films of the year.
However, Parla is best known for his pursuit of a purely abstract vocabulary. Rey likes to consider his work a fusion of Futurism, Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism and scratching inspired by the Graffiti Art of his brother Jose A. Parla Ease" from the InkHeads collective.
His best-known works are: The Revolution of Super 8 Universe: A self-portrait, Sporadic Germination and Rumba Abstracta. Recent work includes: The Ultrareyograms, shown during Art Basel, Empujando un botón (a collaboration with Vanessa Gocksch, Belgium) which showcased at The 4th Annual Sonic Habitat Festival in Muca-Roma, Ciudad Mexico and new experimental eight to twelve hour videos titled: Photographing Electrical Infinity (a.k.a., UltraElectrics) where Parla is using digital photography to capture electricity in its pure form.
Rey Parla has shown his work with artists like: Stan Brakhage, Charles Recher, Lee Quiñones, William Kedell, Ro Starr, Ryan McGuiness, Clayton Patterson, Marilyn Gottlieb-Roberts, and Jose Antonio Sistiaga from Spain to name a few.
Cultura del Lobo is proud to kick-off this years season with this highly acclaimed artist.
