A recent survey in the Greater Manchester area reveals that one in six teenagers has shoplifted in the last twelve months. SDnet, a security analysis company, conducted the research at secondary schools in the Greater Manchester area using an anonymous online surveying system. The survey looked at the extent of shoplifting and the factors which influence teenagers to steal.
Fifteen year olds were the most likely to steal, with 39% having stolen in the past year. Alarmingly, one in twenty claimed that they had stolen either contraception or pregnancy testing kits.
Alex Muir, who conducted the research said 'With just one in five of our respondents having been caught, we need to look at better ways of deterring youths from stealing and catching them if they are tempted.
