Lafayette Breast Center Installs New ImageChecker ® Computer Aided Detection (CAD) System for Breast Cancer Screening

Lafayette Breast Center recently augmented its services with the R2 ImageChecker, a computer aided detection (CAD) system, specifically for mammograms. Computer aided detection helps to overread mammograms to indicate abnormal findings and assist the radiologist.

Lafayette, IN (PRWEB) August 23, 2003 --- Lafayette Breast Center recently augmented its services with the R2 ImageChecker, a computer aided detection (CAD) system, specifically for mammograms. CAD does not replace the radiologists interpretation, but serves as a second look at the areas that need to be more closely scrutinized for possible underlying pathology.

The ImageChecker is the first US Food and Drug Administration approved CAD system. For the radiologist, the interpretation of mammograms can be challenging. The manifestations of breast cancer can be subtle and are portrayed on a complex and variable pattern of normal anatomy -- anatomy that may either obscure or simulate disease.

The system assists radiologists in detecting breast cancers by digitalizing and then analyzing mammograms for regions that may indicate abnormal findings. The radiologist first assesses the original mammogram, then checks the computer scanned version to determine which areas need to be reviewed. CAD doesnt replace radiologists but it improves their interpretive accuracy, which is subject to the limitations of human perception.

Lafayette Breast Center has implemented using the CAD technology as the standard of care for all screening mammograms. Supplementing screening and diagnostic mammograms with CAD technology can allow us to provide our patients the benefits of early detection and improve the overall management and treatment" commented Radiologist Brenda Jurich, M.D. The new technology is currently reimbursed by most insurance carriers, Medicare and Medicaid.

Lafayette Breast Center was established in 1996 and has a staff of six. Lafayette Breast Center is committed to providing our community with the latest medical technology coupled with the highest quality personal care. We are fortunate to have this additional diagnostic tool available to better serve the patients in this area.
