Writers & Teachers Reading Series, Curated by Catherine Daly, Celebrates its One Year Anniversary

Writers & Teachers Reading Series, Curated by Catherine Daly, Celebrates its One Year Anniversary

(PRWEB) August 24, 2003 -- Writers & Teachers is a reading series founded by curator Catherine Daly in hopes that the idea for the series would be picked up by other curators, spreading to other locations.

"Writing teachers are, of course, also published authors," Daly says. "My own best students are themselves published adults."

By highlighting the most accomplished local authors, writing teachers, and the local writing programs where they teach, Writers & Teachers is able to bring authors who don't ordinarily read locally to Barnes & Noble Westwood. "I had friends who would go to the east coast on reading tour, but never read here in Los Angeles." Audiences, by attending the series, survey available options for writing instruction by hearing the results.

"The students are the big surprise," Daly adds. "I knew my own adult students, especially the fiction writers and playwrights, wanted and needed a supportive, non-competitive environment in which to read." Students read with, and are introduced by, their writing teachers in a reading area far from cappucino machines; all readers receive gift certificates, posters, lattes, and lots of great brownies. "I had no idea that so many of the students would also be published authors; I had no idea that so many of the students would have never read in public before." Adult students avoid open mikes and poetry slams, which are mostly geared to unpublished teenagers.

The monthly readings are third Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, at Barnes & Noble Westwood, in the Westside Pavilion Mall, 10850 Pico Blvd., Los Angeles. Readers have included Patty Seyburn, Katherine Haake, Gail Wronsky, Molly Bendall, Michael Datcher, and Rob Roberge.

Catherine Daly is author of DaDaDa, Salt Publishing, 2003. Read more about her reading series curation at http://www.catherinedaly.info; read more about her book at http://www.saltpublishing.com/books/smp/1876857951.htm
