Uses of the Mobile View v 0.4

August, 2003 -- Support and Help Desk; Corporations that provide their employees as well as their representatives with mobile support, in order to remotely manage mobile devices they use Mobile View. Security features such as user profiles, data encryption and audit logging provide secured access to remote control mobile devices. Artificial color reduction feature is commonly used when controlling devices over slow connections (e.g. GPRS or modem connections).

Available set of standard tools such as the Explore, Task Manager, Remote Reset and Registry allow administrators to easily control remote mobile devices. In case of problems, features such as Screen capture and Video recording visually document and email the problem description to the support staff. Live chat option is available for troubleshooting.

Applications for Medical Professionals
For hospitals and other medical institutions, mobile devices are being widely used to deliver critical information such as patient, drug and prescription information to doctors, nurses and other authorized medical staff. Medical professionals are carrying pocket PCs and other mobile devices, which allow constant and instantaneous connection back to a central server or servers using wireless LAN. Pocket PCs are updated in real time as new information becomes available, and can request current patient and/or prescription information from hospital servers.

Mobile View is being used in medical environments to remotely support, diagnose and correct mobile devices problems while doctors and nurses on the hospital floor are using them. Users can call in to a helpdesk in case of a problem, and support staff can guide users through step by step on how to perform a task or to resolve the situation. If there is a problem with the software itself, patches and updates can be applied instantaneously over the air using features such as File Transfer, Registry and Scripting.

Mobile View connection profile for each device can be configured on a central server for each separate user; support staff simply selects a connection profile to connect to a particular device. Video recording feature can be used to actually see and document any problems, and later if necessary for sending the data to appropriate support staff for further troubleshooting and analysis.

Engineering Usage
A new emerging use for Windows CE devices is to implement them into industrial machinery, for example to remotely control and monitor industrial equipment. When used in such way, the devices are usually loaded up with custom software designed to monitor and control the machinery. Interface between the device and the machinery is achieved through a serial or wired/wireless network connection. GUI interface present in Windows CE allows on-site machinery users to control and monitor their machines via custom software.

In some cases the devices do not have a physical display, i.e. "headless" devices. Mobile Devices come to light when the machines malfunction or stop operating, and need to be serviced or monitored by trained professionals. Then the devices are simply connected to Internet through LAN, WLAN, or even using cellular or dial-up modem. Service people can use Mobile View to remotely see what the problem with the device is and fix it. In factories where these devices are used without physical displays, Mobile View is used to monitor these devices and to update software on the devices.

Without Mobile View companies would have to send trained professionals all around the world to do their job. With Mobile View these people can fix problems without leaving their home and often faster and at a much cheaper price. When these devices are used on the factory floor, service personnel do not need to go to each individual machine in order to implement corrections or a new configuration. This can be done remotely, using Mobile View.

Mobile View also allows remote monitoring of the machinery; one person can oversee multiple machines, more than it was ever possible before. The use of Mobile View means companies can purchase cheaper devices without a physical display, and use Mobile View to remotely connect, control and view the screens on these devices using a regular desktop computer.

Remote Monitoring
The use of Mobile View in Remote Monitoring is similar to the use of Mobile View on the factory floor as described above. In this context, the device is being embedded into the machinery and has specialized software installed for capturing readings from the equipment and to send it to a specified location (control room) in real time. Besides sending standard real-time data, embedded devices can also send alert messages when things don't go according to plan.

When an alert notification is received, technical professionals at the control room use Mobile View to connect to embed device remotely, to diagnose the problem and if necessary fix the problem from the comfort of their own chair.
