Flyball Racing Tournaments! Drag Racing Dogs! Thornton, Ontario September 5-7, 2003

Some Ruff Competition presents "The Bark To School Special" and "SharkTEMBERfest 03"

Flyball is the EXTREME sport of the canine world requiring skill, athleticism, balance and plain old guts on the part of both dog and handler! Consider it as "drag racing for dogs".

Flyball is a relay race with 4 dogs on each team racing over hurdles to see who can complete their race first. As the starting light tree counts down, the lead dogs accelerate almost instantly to 20 miles per houre. As they return to their handler at speed, the next dog is released with the two dogs now racing towards the start/finish line as fast as they can go. If all is well, the second dog will arrive at the line one inch after the first dog has crossed the line for a legal pass. If the dog arrives too soon, he is fouled and must rerun, ruining his team's chance for a win.

The dogs are so fast that an Electronic Sensor System is used to start the dogs and judge their passes. Each team's hurdle heights are dependent on the height of their shortest racer and so each team will use a small dog in combination with their fast dogs to optimize their overall speed by reducing the hurdle height. With these fast teams, Border Collies and Jack Russell Terriers abound as historically, they are bred to work all day and Flyball is a great adaptation of that drive.

Some Ruff Competition from Innisfil, Ontario will be hosting two separate Flyball Tournaments at the Thornton Arena, in Thornton, Ontario. The Friday evening event starts at 4:30 p.m. and is limited to 16 teams competing in the Regular Division. The weekend event starts at 8:00 on Saturday morning and includes some of the fastest teams in Ontario competing for wins in both Regular and Multibreed Divisions.

Come and catch the excitement, remember to bring your earplugs, and leave your own canines at home!
