New Survey Data Entry Application For Preservation Professionals
HISTORY HOOKS UP WITH TECHNOLOGY New Survey Data Entry Application For Preservation Professionals
Goshen, AL (PRWEB) August 26, 2003 -- For decades now State Historical Commissions around the country have conducted architectural surveys in an effort to document historic buildings and places. But the tedious pen and paper methods used in documentation are nearly as antiquated as the properties themselves.
Thats why Seventh Impression, a marketing technology company based in Goshen, Alabama has developed a new application specifically designed for preservation professionals to update and digitalize the architectural survey process. Called Survey DM, this new system makes identifying, categorizing, documenting and researching historical properties a breeze
Our goal was to provide the surveyors in the field with the best product possible to help streamline a very meticulous process," says Chris Tidwell, President of Seventh Impression and developer of the application. We wanted to design a digital, paperless system that saves space and makes life easier for the preservation consultants." In order to perform an architectural survey, consultants typically drive to the target area -- whether its a neighborhood, city, or entire county -- and document each historic building by completing a very lengthy form onsite.
This involves writing down detailed physical information, taking photographs, and pinpointing the location on a map. At the end of the project, this information is then archived and stored in files adding to the mounds of paperwork that will most likely never see the light of day again.
By digitalizing the process, all this important information such as old records, images, maps, and surveys goes directly into a web-based, searchable database that is accessible online to the public.
The Alabama Historical Commission has recently implemented the first stages of this application. AHC preservation professionals now carry laptops or hand held devises to the historic sites and conveniently and quickly enter data on the premises. They also bring digital cameras that load photographs at same time the survey information is loaded. As a result, AHC saves both time and money, and dramatically increase productivity.
Trina Binkley, Survey and Registration Section Head for the Alabama Historical Commission, says Survey DM is a major step in the right direction.
Digitization and public access via our web site was long-term goal that is now being realized thanks to Survey DM. Even though it may be a few years before all of the old records/maps/images will be entered and available online, with the application, consultants can start to enter new survey information directly into the database so that at the end of each project these new surveys will be available online."
