ATLANTA, GA (PRWEB) August 29, 2003 -- Telecom Ventures LLC, a wireless application service provider of emergency alerts and other wireless services, has updated its fully interactive, cell phone-based alert service called AlertAmericaOnline to offer national monitoring of PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points) across the US and Canada.
Stephen Winters, managing director of Telecom Ventures LLC, said AlertAmericaOnline is now able to transmit SMS text alerts generated from the monitoring of thousands of 911 calls nationwide and convert those calls into intelligent geo-specific, timely warnings to our subscribers. These messages alert our subscribers to happenings that are time-sensitive and mission-critical. While cell phones have become integral to our personal and professional culture, American society has not yet taken full advantage of mobile data communications. With an estimated 120 million SMS-enabled devices operating in the United States today, the text-messaging network could offer life-saving capabilities during emergencies. SMS is often able to transmit simple text when voice channels through wireless and landline networks are overwhelmed or out of service."
In the recent norteast blackout of 2003 the Chicago Tribune reported, cell calls failed, but text messaging came through in blackout, August 17, 2003.
As millions of people with cellphones frantically placed calls Thursday after the power outage, operational systems were overloaded. Calls were dropped or couldn't get through due to the heavy traffic. Some wireless carriers also experienced reduced capacity due to lack of power at some cell sites.
But the one wireless technology that worked without a hitch during the massive outage was short text messaging. Even when phone calls fail to get through, text messages can make their way over the networks.
Through its national database of subscribers, AlertAmericaOnline sends emergency alerts via Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging, Instant Messaging (IM) and in real-time interactive mode through Wireless Access Protocol (WAP).
AlertAmericaOnline offers a speed advantage over other alert services by filtering information through its proprietary Interactive Multi-Channel Communication Platform (IMCP). IMCP is an application that uses a national, or geo-specific, filtering criteria to determine whether a particular headline constitutes an alert-level message to be sent as a text message to its subscribers. Only a small portion of information provided each month will be sent as text alerts through the service.
In addition to advancing mobile text messaging usage, AlertAmericaOnline also uses advanced notification features such as flashing screens and varied tones to differentiate its alerts from normal messages, subject to individual device and carrier capabilities.
