THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS IN LONDON

Ireland's proclaimed muralists show their work in London.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS

September 6th at 7.30 pm sees the opening at The Horse Hospital Gallery, Colonnade, Bloomsbury, London, a unique exhibition of the work of The Bogside Artists. The show will comprise 10 enormous photos of the artists' murals digitally reproduced on plastic and measuring twelve feet by nine.

These murals are situated in the area of Derry, Northern Ireland, known as The Bogside. This was the scene of the Bloody Sunday massacre that occurred on January 30th 1972 during the trouble that has raged in the province since 1969.

In the wake of the ongoing fiasco that is 'The Turner Prize', this show will come as a breath of fresh air to the tower of Babel that is modern art. It will serve to remind the public what art was originally meant to be and to do.

It is a measure of the artists' achievement that they were able to do this work in the face of impossible circumstances and general indifference from the arts funding bodies throughout the UK. It is a measure of their resolve that they continue to paint, in service to their goal of 1993 to make of the Bogside an open-air gallery, a people's gallery, that they have humorously dubbed "The Bogside Modern".

The Bogside Artists have two touring exhibitions in place, one in the USA and the other in Australia. These have been resounding successes bringing much attention not only to Derry but to the artistic character
of Ireland as a whole. The USA show will shortly be heading for a tour of Canada while the Australia show prepares to come home for exhibition in Ireland.

The Horse Hospital is the first stop of a European tour. The work will travel on to Frankfurt and thence to other venues in Germany, Belgium and France. You can find out more about The Bogside Artists from
