Lightship Telecom Introduces ATM To The Edge To Business in New England

New Service from Lightship Telecom allows dynamic bandwidth allocation, or "ATM To The Edge," allowing all communication channels to be used for data AND voice, not data OR voice.

BEDFORD, NH (PRWEB) September 5, 2003 -- Lightship Telecom, a provider of high speed Internet, data, long distance and local voice services to New England businesses, has introduced Lightship Advantage," a breakthrough new access service that through the use of dynamic bandwidth allocation, provides more efficient communications bandwidth for its customers.

Historically, T1 communications channels are dedicated to voice or Internet traffic. Lightship Advantage leverages all available channels in T1 circuits by monitoring voice lines and allowing data services to borrow" unused voice bandwidth when the phones are not in use. As a result, businesses benefit from increased data bandwidth when voice calls are not being made without requiring an increase in cost.

Lightship Advantage uses Asynchronous Mode Transfer (ATM), a mature and tested packet switching technology that processes voice and Internet traffic with superior efficiency. In most carrier and large enterprise networks, ATM is only used in the core of the switching network, but not all the way to a customers premises. Lightship Advantage delivers ATM To The Edge" -- directly to a customers facility over traditional T1 facilities.

To execute dynamic bandwidth allocation, Lightship Telecom has deployed the Paradyne Jetstream CPX-1000MG Media Gateway, providing seamless transition from TDM to packet-based services. Paradyne technology delivers 200% more bandwidth than TDM competitors and supports ATM and IP in the same platform. Lightship Advantage leverages the existing class 5 Nortel switches in the Lightship Telecom digital communications network to provide a full range of voice features.

Devine Systems, a New England systems integrator, recently implemented dynamic bandwidth allocation via Lightship Advantage.

Lightship Advantage has dramatically increased our bandwidth and lowered our costs," said John Devine, President, Devine Systems, Manchester, NH. Dynamic bandwidth allocation is a tremendous service; it gives Devine much higher productivity and significant efficiencies, both of which contribute to the bottom line."

Lightship Advantage expands an organizations telecommunications abilities," said Kevin OHare, President and CEO, Lightship Telecom. By freeing up voice bandwidth for data traffic during low call volume periods, Lightship Telecom Advantages dynamic bandwidth allocation feature provides more bandwidth to our customers without a corresponding increase in their expense."

During a typical workday, the volume of voice and Internet traffic varies substantially. At any hour, voice or Internet channels are idle. Lightship Advantage uses a channel for voice or Internet service, upon demand. Voice circuits receive first priority, but circuits switch automatically between voice and Internet service. Lightship Advantage is ideal for high-use Internet requirements and large file transfers. Dynamically allocated bandwidth can burst to up to 1.024 Mbps or 1.536 Mbps of data.

Lightship Advantage supports POTS or Centrex voice service and Permanent Virtual Circuits for Frame Relay connections.
