The founders of A Mothers CharmTM, Ruth Ellen Heaton and Kari Hunt, are adoptive moms who met while going through the adoption process with Buckner International Adoption. They became friends during their time of anticipation" and came closer together through sharing their emotional/hormonal swings. Finally, within a week of each other, the new mothers got the first glimpse of the children they had held in their hearts for so long. While sharing the new pictures, they noticed the boys were together. Then they learned that their sons were from the same 12-child group in an orphanage inside St. Petersburg, Russia. The two boys were the best of friends having lived together for years. A few months later, when one left with his new adoptive parents, the other was heartbroken and thought he would never see his friend again. Less than a month later, in December of 2001, he got to hug his long-time friend who was waiting for him at the airport in Dallas, Texas.
The idea for A Mothers CharmTM began one night in September 2002 while the two families were together. Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Heaton were discussing charms and that they were each looking for pieces that reflected motherhood experiences as well as the process of adoption. Following some research, the mothers agreed to form a business together that would provide jewelry and gift designs that tell special stories of motherhood. Their Signature Collection designs would depict Moments of a Lifetime", the small happenings that a mother remembers years later. The new line would also offer unique pieces that recognize the miracle of adoption and celebrate the non-traditional milestones of an adoptive family.
Over its first year, A Mothers CharmTM has become a business that regularly advocates for adoption. The company hosts free local seminars with expert speakers to advise on affording adoption in the current economic conditions. The companys November anniversary and National Adoption Month celebration will include the release of its book 100+ Ways You Can Afford Adoption. The book is based on its popular seminar and has been modified due to requests received from across the USA to include information applicable to areas across the states. A Mothers CharmTM is also developing a program to assist families who are raising money for adoptions.
A Mothers CharmTM also supports orphan care programs around the world. Buckner Orphan Care International (BOCI) in particular holds a special place in the founders collective heart. While in Russia, the mothers saw the children in the orphanage wearing familiar looking clothing thanks to the generosity of BOCI. At the time, Mrs. Hunt remembers commenting to her husband, It seems that the Cowboys arent just Americas Team," referring to a child dawning a Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt. Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Heaton credit BOCI for providing their sons with many basic necessities while living in the orphanage, so A Mothers CharmTM donates 10% of its profits to BOCI to help them help the otherwise forgotten children in the USA and around the world.
A year in business and A Mothers CharmTM product line has grown from its basic beginnings to include a striking selection of innovative styles with many of the designs celebrating adoption. The popular "Gotcha" design, an engravable memento marking the day an adoption becomes final, is not only a sterling silver charm, but also comes as a key chain. And for the November celebrations, A Mothers CharmTM will introduce the Gotcha Christmas ornament to honor the miracle of adoption at the most miraculous time of year. The first two ornaments produced will be engraved with December 7, 2001 and December 24, 2001.
About the Company
Two mothers, Kari Hunt and Ruth Ellen Heaton, who met in the process of adopting their sons in 2001, founded A Mothers CharmTM in the fall of 2002. Relishing the firsts" and other special moments with their newly expanded families, these career women and new mothers who have a passion for philanthropy, decided to make another life altering change. They wanted to create a business that would celebrate motherhood moments and make a difference in the world around them.
A Mothers CharmTM (www.motherscharm.com) exclusive jewelry and gift designs capture the Moments of a Lifetime", the small happenings that make a mother smile when she remembers them years later. Their Signature Collection includes many special pieces that celebrate the miracle of adoption. The company opened its virtual doors at motherscharm.com in November 2002 with nine original Signature Collection sterling silver charm designs, the inspiration behind its 888-9-CHARMS phone number.
The company acts as an adoption advocate by offering free seminars on the financial and medical/psychological aspects of adoption, featuring various adoption stories and highlighting valued agencies in their publications. A Mothers CharmTM also has a program in development that will foster fundraising capabilities for adoptive families in process.
Motivated by the care their own sons received, the founders have dedicated ten percent of A Mothers CharmTM profits to Buckner Orphan Care International (http://helporphans.org/), an organization that provides humanitarian aid to orphans in the USA and around the world. In Summer 2003, Mrs. Heaton and Mrs. Hunt also created a philanthropic charm line depicting Shoes from Around the World" to show their appreciation to Shoes for Orphan Souls (SFOS). Ten dollars of every shoe charm sold is donated to SFOS, an organization that collects and delivers new shoes to orphans in the USA and 37 other countries each year.
