New Review Journal Selects a Howard-Johnson Story for First Issue

New Review Journal Selects a Howard-Johnson Story for First Issue

An "As-Told-To" Story

September 6, 2003 - "My father was a powerful Cree shaman. But to the Blackfoot around Browning, I was still only a half-breed, only a half a notch better than if my other half had been." So begins the story "The Grandfather Rock" by award-winning novelist Carolyn Howard-Johnson. It was just published by The Banyan Review, a magazine for women edited by Carol Shellye Renee-Ruiz.

Howard-Johnson's first novel, "This is the Place", has garnered eight awards since its release in 2001 and an excerpt was published in the prestigious Copperfield Review. It was also a NUW Book Club Selection in 2002. Her second book, "Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered", has won three awards including WordThunder.com's annual award for excellence.

The author says that her magical story, "The Grandfather Rock," is based on a story told to her by a woman of American Indian heritage who had come to Feathered Pipe Ranch near Helena, Montana to conduct a sweat lodge ceremony for a group of breast cancer survivors. It took her a minute to understand that she was utterly serious about her mythology and another brief moment to understand that my own culture's myths may seem just as mysterious to the uninitiated. Then she realized that her story fitted well with a theme she often explores in her work: "Nonfiction is rife with little white lies; great truths abound in fiction."
