Buy a piece of Mars? On eBay?

On September 5th, 2003 eBay will begin auctioning at $450,000 on a genuine, authenticated, piece of Zagami, a famous meteorite from Mars. After traveling for millions of miles and millions of years in space, Zagami fell to earch in Nigeria in 1962. It has been in a museum and the private owner is now selling the rock.

Beginning on September 5, eBay will begin auctioning a genuine 188 gram (940 Carat) specimen of Zagami, (rock of the red planet,Mars), with a beginning bid of $450,000, which will make it the most expensive meteorite ever offered on e-Bay. Valuation is similar to that of Diamonds. According to Florida Today Space Online, one acclaimed meteorite expert contends the market for Mars rocks is headed toward $1,000 a carat to $10,000 per Carat for the rarest most valued pieces.

This is the largest known piece of Zagami in circulation owned by a private individual. After floating for millions of years in Space, Zagami fell to Earth October 3rd , 1962 in central Nigeria. It is now estimated by NASA to be approximately 180 million years old, though some sources say it maybe as old as 1.3 billion years. Out of 22,000 meteorites known to man, only 28 are actually known to be Martian."

Displayed for several years in a Museum, one side is cut to display the internal layers, and another side has been left natural with a black flanked crust to show the fusion (actual burning and melting) of the rock as it passed at high speeds through the atmosphere while falling to earth.
