True Slope Productions makes it theatrical debut Sept. 4 with a daring rendition of Waiting for Godot, a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense."

Samuel Becketts timeless masterpiece has since its birth served as a reminder of mankinds inexhaustible search for meaning". It is simple, minimalist and somber. Yet today, through a cast of young theatre lovers, Waiting for Godot acquires a new level of complexity.

I dont know when it was that I decided to have the actors randomly switch roles every night," said Mark Sitko, director. I wanted to support the concept that each performance would be fresh and live; that the actors would be forced to listen to each other and interact, allowing each line to flow more freely."

Four actors are given their roles 15 minutes before each show, changing the dynamics and challenging them to rely on instincts and improvisational skills.

Oftentimes, when actors memorize one part, they learn it so well that its all planned out. There is nothing left to risk," Sitko said. But the advantage theatre has over film is that its live. I wanted to push that concept."

Sitko also decided to break away from the plays traditional all-male cast by including two female performers. The play can take different turns each night based on the actors interacting on stage," he said. It can take on the themes of marriage and relationships, of friendship and sexuality. A mixed cast adds a new dimension to the play and creates a new realm of possible interpretations."

The story line evolves around two seemingly homeless characters waiting for someone - or something - named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon find themselves near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a never-ending struggle to find purpose to their existence.

A seminal work of twentieth-century drama, Waiting for Godot was Samuel Becketts first professionally produced play. It opened in Paris in 1953 at the tiny Left Bank Theatre de Babylone, and has since become a cornerstone of twentieth-century theatre.

Fifty years later, performed in a small theatre on Melrose, the plays post-WWII European existentialism seems to resonate more vividly than ever with the realities of contemporary America -- 9.11, war on terrorism, unemployment, and mounting international tensions.

Its the story of man struggling to find the purpose of his routine," Sitko said. The climax of the play is to watch Vladimir despair, 'Why should I get up tomorrow? 'Why should I come back? That monologue runs through the mind of most L.A. residents as they drive home in traffic. Who doesnt wonder at least once a day why we do this? Why we get up every morning, get into a car and drive to the office?"
