StreamSage Wins Air Force Research Laboratory Contract
Universal Translation" Technology for Audio/Video Content Under Development
StreamSage, a leading provider of information management software, today announced that the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL) awarded StreamSage a two year contract to develop language translation technologies for support of military operations.
With the tremendous volume of spoken word content the U.S. military and intelligence communities must translate and mine for valuable information, our nations analysts and warfighters are seeking a more automated electronic translation system than is currently available. The contract calls for technology development that will focus on the Interlingua" technique, a type of universal translator," or intermediary language, that enables foreign languages to be converted into English with a minimum of human translation or training.
StreamSage, the prime contractor, was chosen based on its expertise in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and speech recognition. Also working on the contract as a subcontractor is GMSI, an advanced IT and network solutions provider for the government, which teamed with StreamSage to deploy and integrate these language-understanding technologies within government agencies.
Often referred to as machine translation," these sophisticated, language understanding technologies are now possible through the increases in computing speed and power. StreamSages contextual approach to translation provides greater accuracy compared to the limitations inherent in current approaches. For instance, the English verb to reach" can be translated into either of the French words gagner" or setendre", depending on the context of the sentence. The StreamSage approach is able to correctly identify which is the correct context, and thus translate the English to reach" into the correct French verb.
StreamSages existing government and commercial sector applications are used to automatically, contextually index audio/video information. StreamSages highly granular index of meta-data allows customers to quickly and accurately search, retrieve and manage audio, video, and multimedia content.
