New Compilation Documents Current State of Alternative Music Scene in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, North Carolina Compulation: Volume One, Songs from North Carolina

Groundbreaking Independent Band Compilation Set for September Release. Features new music from the Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh area. Includes bands such as Portastatic, The Rosebuds, Jett Rink, and more.

DURHAM, NC - On 20 September, Durham-based record label Pox World Empire will release a compilation of brand-new recordings by some of its favorite bands from the Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh music community. Compulation: Volume One documents and celebrates the current state of the independent/alternative music scene that made a name for itself in the Nineties with such bands as Superchunk, Polvo, and Archers of Loaf.

Holding the mutual belief that the Triangle music scene is in the midst of a renaissance, the album's producers, Zeno Gill and Mark Lebetkin, wanted to release a collection of some of the best music they know, locally or anywhere. The two of them observed that over the past couple of years, an abundance of note-worthy bands has developed. And other members of the music community -- musicians and critics -- agree.

Compulation includes tracks from the most heralded bands in the area, such as recent Merge Records signees The Rosebuds, and Jett Rink, believed by many to be the Triangle's premier live band. It is a testament to the fertility of the scene that the bands and songs vary so greatly in style, from the experimental electrorock of Cold Sides to the unapologetic punk rock of The Ghost of Rock; from the irresistible Eighties-style pop of Gerty to the raw, emotionally potent beauty of des_ark. Also featured is a brand-new recording from seminal Merge artist Portastatic.

Casey Burns, the well respected illustrator/designer from Chapel Hill, created the striking artwork for the CD.

POX WORLD EMPIRE
BRIEF BIO

Pox World Empire, the small, Durham-based record label/studio run by Zeno Gill, released two acclaimed CDs in the last two years. The Sames E.P was a critical success, and, in fact, was the second most played album of 2002 on WXDU. Jett Rink's eponymous EP was also a huge success, achieving heavy airplay at WXDU and WXYC. The Independent listed both CDs as among the best ten local releases of the last two years.

Pox is currently working on a new EP with new wavers Gerty and a new album from the energetic indie-popsters Pleasant. Zeno is also busy coordinating a project called Poxperiment Volumen A, which will feature musicians from Superchunk, Polvo, the Ashley Stove, the Sames, Jett Rink, Cold Sides, des_ark, Shark Quest, and many more.
