Verdiem Brings Energy Efficiency to Government PCs

The companys network energy efficiency" software goes to work in energy-conscious government facilities, from cities to state agencies and federal offices

Portland, OR (PRWEB) September 10, 2003 -- Verdiem, maker of a software utility that measures, manages, and reduces energy consumption in large PC networks, has secured customers for its Surveyor Network Energy Manager at all levels of government and from coast to coast. In the second and third quarters of this year the company finalized sales to a number of city offices, regional government offices, large state agencies, and to a U.S. Department of Energy facility.

In August, the New York Power Authority purchased enough licenses of the Surveyor software to outfit every PC in its White Plains, New York offices-nearly 1,000 computers. This came after an extensive evaluation that began the previous December and was headed by Rino Trovato, Program Manager in NYPAs Energy Services and Technology Department, and included members of his staff, the NYPA IT staff, and Verdiem personnel.

Trovatos Design and Implementation group, tasked with finding new energy efficiency products and making them available to state and municipal offices, state colleges, and school systems throughout the state of New York, had been searching for a way to quantify the energy drain of PCs when Verdiem contacted him at the end of 2002. Verdiem suggested a test to see if Surveyor could reduce per-PC energy consumption in NYPAs offices by the 200 kilowatt-hour average they had seen in other facilities, and their message struck a chord with Trovato. A lot of people look to us for an opinion on new conservation and efficiency products, so we evaluate them very cautiously and carefully. We look at everything from the technology to the services to the people." After five cross-country trips by Verdiem, the evaluation returned positive results: even in a building full of New Yorks most energy-conscientious computer users, the product clearly saved energy and money. NYPA now plans to sponsor evaluations of Surveyor at several of its customers sites, including the City University of New York.

On the federal level, Verdiem delivered more than 1,000 licenses of Surveyor to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory last quarter. NREL in Golden, Colorado, is a leading U.S. Department of Energy laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. The product has also been deployed in municipal offices across the country. METRO, a multi-county regional government in the Portland, Oregon area, was one of Verdiems first customers in 2002. Surveyor is quietly saving energy throughout METROs service area, in PCs located in such diverse environments as transportation, parks and recreation, and even the world-renowned Oregon Zoo. In California, the City of San Jose has completed an extensive evaluation of Surveyor is finalizing their plan to deploy Surveyor to 6,000 PCs throughout the city.
