Automotive Lubricants Specifications Approved
Standards for manufacturing motor oil are governed by organizations that control guidelines and specifications of the lubricant industry. Vehicles, for the next decade, will benefit of those stringent guidelines. GF-4 Specifications have been approved.
ILSAC/Oil recently, as of Sept. 1, 2003, approved final draft limits of the GF-4 engine oil specifications, clearing the way for American Petroleum Institute (API) to publish it and begin licensing the new oils for 2005 model vehicles. According to ILSAC/Oil Chairman Bob Olree of General Motors, first licensing should begin no later than July 2004, and GF-3 licensing will cease after April 2005. Next on APIs agenda will be developing GF-4s companion APIs S" Service Category, most likely API SM.
