According to Tracey Picon Communications, a firm specializing in public relations and marketing for small-to-mid sized companies, smart business owners committed to a strong finish to the year should apply these strategies:
Leverage business and social opportunities during the holiday season.
The holidays present excellent opportunities to network with existing and potential clients, vendors, trade association members and other business owners. Industry functions, receptions and community events are powerful venues to reconnect with business associates and colleagues. Be sure to participate and network. Who knows? You might meet people who can direct valuable leads your way or make potential client introductions.
Consider planning your own holiday event. Invite current customers, potential clients, employees and colleagues. It can be a highly effective way to announce new products or services youll be offering in 2004 or simply the right occasion to wish everyone a Happy New Year." The good cheer generated by the event can enhance your companys image and build professional
relationships.
Reward customer and employee loyalty.
In the spirit of thanksgiving, its important to thank your clients for their business, and your employees for their service and dedication. In a competitive marketplace, where consumers are constantly solicited, reward those who have chosen to stay with your company. Send them holiday greetings" cards or a gift basket, and be sure to include a handwritten message that will leave a favorable impression. Your clients need to know that you value their business.
Plan a staff luncheon or event for your employees. Despite the fact that money is tight and raises are not what they used to be, employees will notice and appreciate your thoughtfulness and recognition of their hard work.
Evaluate whats working" and whats not".
The fourth quarter is the time to examine your entire operation to determine if your business is on track to meet its financial projections, sales goals, production targets and market share objectives. If your numbers" are not where they should be, assess why and devise a plan. Develop seasonal promotions to help your company attract more customers. Remember to keep things in context: it has been an usually difficult time for all businesses because of the weak economy.
Focus on your clients and their needs.
Compile a list of clients whose contracts are up for renewal. Meet with your customers to see how theyre doing and feel the pulse" of their organization. A cautionary note: this is not a sales call. Look for additional ways your company can better serve customer needs and add more value.
Develop your business goals and objectives for 2004.
Focus on the new year and the opportunities and challenges for your company. Identify successes and learn from mistakes or difficult situations that might have occurred during the year. Meet with key managers and staff members. Solicit their input and feedback on company performance and market conditions. Implement pertinent findings and strategies into your 2004 business plan.
