Ever wonder what makes some small businesses successful while others fail? The secrets to success are not so secret anymore," says Shane Reed, local membership representative for the National Association for the Self-Employed. (PRWEB) September 17, 2003 --- Ever wonder what makes some small businesses successful while others fail? The secrets to success are not so secret anymore," says Shane Reed, local membership representative for the National Association for the Self-Employed. The NASE has found that successful small-business owners share some common characteristics," explains Reed. These common traits include:

Plans-To succeed you need well-executed plans that cover time, money, market trends and resources.

Priorities-Live a balanced life with time for family, friends, yourself and your business.

People-Working at home can be lonely and secluded so get out and network. Increase your circle of influence by joining an association or attending a seminar. Youll be rejuvenated with new ideas and can come away with valuable business leads.

Principles-Discipline, motivation, dedication and persistence are all traits youll need. Avoid distractions and procrastination by keeping your workplace and hours separate from the rest of your responsibilities.

Patience-Success does not happen overnight. When you come across a bump in the road, dont get discouraged. Learn from it and then proceed toward your ultimate goal.

Professionalism-Make a good impression in all your dealings with your clients, whether in person, through the mail or on the phone. Have your business cards professionally printed. Have a business phone line installed and consider using a voice mail system. Never, under any circumstances, use call waiting.

The National Association for the Self-Employed has been serving the needs of small-business owners and the self-employed for 20 years. The NASE offers its Members more than 100 valuable benefits designed specifically for the smallest of small businesses. Members can enjoy discounts on a variety of business and personal tools, including office supplies, credit card processing services, hotel accommodations, travel and auto rentals.

Members also have access to useful information through an award-winning Web site at www.nase.org, an exclusive bimonthly magazine, and free business and tax advice. In addition, the NASE has a full-time Washington, D.C.-based legislative staff that gives its members a strong political voice and the negotiating power that comes with group size.
