Amelia Book Island Festival will feature new Friday events

Plan to arrive before Saturday if you'd like to take advantage of several special activities just added to the schedule.

Events for Writers

Two of the events on Friday, Oct. 3, will be of special interest to writers:

"Publishing: Are You Ready To Take the Reins?" is a seminar at 2 p.m. In this program, Barbara Johnston of Skip'N'Stones Productions and Emily Carmain of Noteworthy Writing and Editorial Services, Amelia Island, give an in-depth look at what you need to know before publishing your own book. Find out about options and alternatives, pitfalls to avoid, editing, design, printing and other tips. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. This is informal and open to all, no reservations required. Location: Slider's Seaside Grill, 1998 S. Fletcher Dr. (corner of Sadler Road and S. Fletcher Drive).

"Up Close and Personal with an Agent" is at 3 p.m. Literary agent Cricket Pechstein of Vero Beach will hold a one-hour session (limited to 15 people) in which writers can give her a quick pitch about a book and get her feedback and/or advice. Individuals must sign up in advance to be included. Cost: $20. Location: Amelia Hotel & Suites, 1997 S. Fletcher Ave., 904/261-5735. Please e-mail us if you want to register for this, since space is limited. Send email to info@bookisland.org or call the Festival line, 904-491-8176, and a program representative will respond promptly.

Books by the Beach

Another event on tap Friday afternoon will be fun for all book lovers. Don't miss the "Books-by-the-Beach Party" starting at 4 p.m. at Slider's Seaside Grill. It would be hard to imagine a better way to unwind, get into the festival mood - and ease your mind onto "island time." This casual social is an opportunity to meet and mingle with local authors at a local landmark overlooking the ocean. Dickie Anderson, columnist and author of From the Porch, will bring her own special charm as she introduces the authors and special guests. Open to the public; admission is free. Reservations are recommended: 904/277-6652.
