Killer 'Cane: The Deadly Hurricane of 1928, by Robert Mykle, was recently named the winner of the 2003 Carolynn Washbon Award from the Florida Historical Society and the Florida Historical Library Foundation. The award is for the book best promoting the study of Florida history and heritagbe with general interest or youth appeal.
Mykle is a featured author for the Amelia Book Island Festival and will speak in two programs on Saturday, Oct. 4: the 1:30 p.m. panel, "The Power of Persistence, Luck and Desire." and a 3:30 p.m. session, "How We Got the True Story."
Mykle, who lives in Lake Worth, Fla., interviewed dozens of survivors of the devastating storm to write his nonfiction book (Cooper Press). The author reveals how society failed to protect whole communities, why thousands didn't receive warnings and other facts about the hurricane that took 2,400 lives.
His book has been featured on TV weather channel documentaries and other programs and is attracting special interest during hurricane season.
