(PRWEB) September 16, 2003---Some of Kenyas last colonial wardens recall the Game Department in the closing years of the British Empire
Ian Parker and Stan Bleazard have achieved the nearly impossible feat of persuading seventeen old and retired game wardens from the Kenya National Game Reserves to recall their experiences in the 1950s and 60s. The sun was going down on Britains involvement in colonial Africa and independence was greatly altering the traditional view of wildlife conservation.
Under staffed, under funded and largely untrained, the wardens and their assistants fought against bureaucracy as much as poachers to establish a safe haven where animals might continue to live as they have for thousands of years. An impossible dream perhaps, but one which will never go away -- demonstrated by the recent formation of a major new game park in South Africa.
Their individual accounts tell it how it was" and give an insight into life at that time. Largely untrained, they set out with an enthusiasm, which carried them through to a higher plain of expertise learned on the job. Tragedy, farce and hardship are mixed in equal measure with a real concern for the animals as well as helping the indigenous population to co-exist with Africas greatest asset. There are fascinating accounts of early experiments in darting and relocating animals, animal husbandry on a large scale, dramatic confrontations with ivory poachers and even the removal of an errant lion from downtown Nairobi! The eccentric behaviour of The Great White Hunters" who came to bag trophies is faithfully recorded.
Parker and Bleazard have cleverly edited the seventeen individual contributions to make a smooth and easy narrative packed with much information and humour. They have succeeded in their task of showing what it was like to be a game warden during this time of change and have recorded a piece of history which hitherto has lain largely undisturbed. They have also included a large selection of photographs, many of which have not been published before.
