District Upgrades With EzThin and Gateway to Connect Students

(Kearney, MO) Kearney School District, located in Kearney Missouri has integrated EzThin, a Linux-based Technology bundled with Gateway servers into their infrastructure as an enhancement to their existing network. This move was designed to both enhance capabilities as well as provide financial savings.

Kearney, MO (PRWEB) September 22, 2003 --By choosing the EzThin Server solution, Kearney is providing all high school students and staff with general computing capabilities, including a browser, Open Office Productivity Suite (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, edutainment, etc.) and secure remote file access. This has significantly reduced the complexity of their network and provided students and staff with access from home with much higher student tasking speeds. While acting as a file-server for both Microsoft window's machines and thin-client terminals, the EzThin server also includes the firewall protection and DHCP functions that previously required additional hardware and software.

EzThin is based upon the latest technology of GeKL Technologies' Gentoo Linux platform and, based upon the software the comes bundled as part of the solution, it eliminates the need of purchasing costly server and desktop software.

The licensing cost for software and remote access for staff and students has continued to be a burden on the School District's budget. The challenge has been to provide our staff and students with the best computing capability and stay within budgetary restraints. By utilizing EzThin, we will be able to reduce software cost and provide greater access for both students and staff. In addition, we had about 100 233mHz PCs with Windows 95 which were pretty much obsolete. With the EzThin Server, these machines are now acting as brand new thin Clients" in the classroom. They are very fast, and EzThin has significantly extended the life of these computers. Another very powerful capability is accessing Windows based software from EzThin's Virtual Desktop. This will literally enable students to take the classroom home; a capability we have not had in the past. Plus teachers can access programs like Power Grade remotely from anywhere there is Internet connectivity with greater edit capability than they had before. It is a real win/win for staff, students and the IT department."
