As Hurricane Isabel moved through the Mid-Atlantic, many residents received critical information and instructions by telephone. Over the past 72 hours Community Alert Network's emergency telephone notification system has delivered messages to tens of thousands of U.S. residents.
Albany, NY September 26 2003 Throughout the past few days Community Alert Network's high speed telephone emergency notification system has contacted tens of thousands of residents in the southeastern U.S. distributing critical information and instructions regarding Hurricane Isabel. Beginning Wednesday morning a series of notifications were made by municipalities in North Carolina to instruct residents to take precautionary measures. As the path of the storm became clear by late Wednesday afternoon the notification's subject changed to an order to evacuate.
The earliest notifications included advising residents to take precautions such as securing food and water, bringing in lawn furniture, and assuring the safety of pets. Later, when evacuation became necessary, residents were instructed to proceed to local shelters farther inland. Finally, notifications were made to inform residents that a curfew had been implemented throughout the area.
All totaled, over 40,000 calls were made spanning 19 different notifications. Community Alert Network's dual call out centers in New York and Nevada worked simultaneously to distribute all of the calls. The flexibility of the Community Alert Network system was fully demonstrated as conditions rapidly changed the subjects of the notifications were also easily changed and sent to residents.
