Airdales and Crewmen of Guadalcanal
Many people are not aware of the TBF and SBD planes that were in service at the beginning of the "Guadalcanal" invasion, as well as the recognition of the pilots and crewmen that served on those planes.
This "gutsy" historical novel is suitable material for a war movie.
"Airdales and Crewmen of Guadalcanal" is a story based on the enlisted men of the Marine Corps, the crewmen of the TBF-1 Torpedo Bombers and Dauntless SBD Dive Bombers that were stationed at Henderson Air Field in August of 1942.
These crewmen engaged the Imperial Japanese air force, Army and Navy in aerial combat and bombing missions on a daily basis to protect that precious real estate known as "Guadalcanal."
A pilot and crew were chosen and assigned to the VMFTB-132 squadron. They volunteered for a bombing mission in the New Georgia Straits, and were presumed lost soon after. A New Georgia coast watcher by the name of Steve Williams and his scouts' track them to a Japanese held island and learn that they are critically wounded. It is assumed they will die due to wounds received from aerial combat with Japanese Zeros of the 11th Air Fleet if they are not rescued soon.
Group Commander Colonel George Reeves, Adjutant Major Henry Horton and Communications Sergeant Sidney Greenspan at Henderson Field realize they must act quickly to save these men.
A final decision however can only be made by the "Commander and Chief of the Pacific Theater of Operations" (CIN-C-PAC), Admiral Clarence Morrison. Will these brave Airdales be written off as expendable and presumed missing in action or will the Marine and "CIN-C-PAC" make the effort to save them?
