HISTORY IN THE MAKING FOR CRAIGMILLAR THANKS TO MILLENNIUM AWARD

John who also teaches online genealogy at CCIS said, "Receiving this award has boosted my confidence no end. This Millennium Award is opening so many doors for me and the skills I am developing will make a real difference to the local community. The Millennium Awards are a great opportunity for people to try to make a difference in their community and I would encourage others to apply for such funding."

John is going to be working with CCIS to develop the Craigmillar local history Web site and it is hoped to also produce a tie in video and book.

Dr Andrew McDonald, CCIS Manager and supervisor for the project said, "The aim of the project is to put Craigmillar on the history map of Edinburgh. Craigmillar is very rich in built up heritage and history, which to date has been largely ignored. The area has many hidden historic gems which this project will unearth and allow to shine.'

Craigmillar is Edinburgh's forth poorest community in Scotland but has a rich heritage going back thousands of years from Iron Age Hill Forts and Crannogs, Norman and historic churches, medieval forts and it own castle. However, much of this is not known to the wider public.

The 'Craigmillar History in the Making' Project is a community initiative which will involve local people attending classes on the built up heritage and local history of the area. Using completely new and up to date research it is hoped the Web site will be of interest to local historians the world over.

Once the Project is completed it is proposed to seek further funding to develop and promote an Edinburgh Tourist Pilgrimage Route from the Historic Port of Leith to Duddingston Kirk and Craigmillar Castle. This has never been done before and will open up a new experience to the many tourists visiting Edinburgh each year.
