Palisade Systems, a leading provider of network defense solutions, announced today the launch of PacketHound 2.5, its award-winning network application management appliance. PacketHound is used by a rapidly growing group of mid- to large-sized companies as well as educational institutions. The newest version of PacketHound contains significantly expanded reporting capabilities and management enhancements.

PacketHound has been a great solution," said T.J. Araujo, information technology director for the Prudential Americana Group. I manage a network of 1000 realtors running many resource-intensive programs. PacketHound has been key in allowing me to easily eliminate abusive applications, while ensuring enough bandwidth is available for business-critical tasks."

Unlike Quality-of-Service (QoS) tools, which are used to slow down applications, PacketHound eliminates security and liability threats by blocking rogue applications on a network. Over the last year, the number of worms created to exploit peer-to-peer and instant messaging applications have greatly increased causing a serious security threat to commercial networks. Stopping an application on the network is the only way to control this threat.

PacketHound Version 2.5 can schedule reports to be e-mailed to an administrator either daily or weekly, create customized reports to analyze problem areas on a network, and look up host and user names within a Windows network to identify network abusers more easily. Improvements in PacketHound management allow for the aggregation and display of multiple occurrences of the same violation, making it possible for the administrator to identify and prioritize network problems quickly.

PacketHound is a practical and proactive appliance," said Eric Schnack, Palisade Systems chief operating officer. It relies on a patented pass-by technology to halt network threats without impacting network performance."

PacketHound 2.5 is available now. Pricing begins at $2,200 for educational and nonprofit institutions and $2,600 for commercial organizations.
