Cairo Book Fair: Is Abortion Too Controversial For Fiction?
Author of new anthology defies industry, includes abortion as an element in a work of fiction.
The Unites States, this week, marked the thirtieth anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states. With opposing groups continuing to capture national headlines, abortion remains a taboo topic in works of fiction. Writers and publishers of fiction have vigorously avoided addressing this potentially divisive issue. One notable exception is a newly released book, The Last Autopsy & Other Inimitable Tales by N. Zaenglein, an author who insists on including abortion as an element in his writings. The issue is too important to be ignored by authors and publishers," said Cheri Martinelli, spokesperson for Night Howl, publisher of the sometimes-controversial work. Fiction provides the opportunity to examine the abortion issue from a fresh perspective."
