For Immediate Release: Biography Profile of a Top Town of Hempstead Leader
Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dorothy L. Goosby was elected to the Town Board on November 2, 1999. She was one of the first Democrats to be elected to public office in the Town of Hempstead since 1905. She is the first African American woman to serve as councilwoman in 2000-2001. She was re-elected in November 2001 to a four-term in the First Councilmatic District.
In 1988, Councilwoman Goosby, as a private citizen, and others filed a class action suit against the Town of Hempstead charging that the Town of Hemspteads At-Large voting system for the Town Board discriminated against the minority community. In 1997, a federal district judge agreed and ruled that the Town of Hempsteads method of At-Large voting was discriminatory and violated the Voting Rights Acts. In January 2000, the United States Supreme Court denied review of the Town of Hempsteads appeals. The federal district judge, then ordered that a special election be held for all seats in November 2000.
Dorothy L. Goosby is a New York State Certified and Licensed ADA Dietitian with more than twenty-five years of administrative experience in the medical profession. She is a published author whose article Nutritional Management of Long Term Care Resident Receiving Hemodialysis," published in Topics on Clinical Nutrition.
While Councilwoman Goosbys professional accomplishments are noteworthy, she is most recognized for her on-going community efforts in Town of Hempstead and Nassau County.
Councilwoman Goosby has received several civic and community awards including: The Community Award, The SoJournal Award, Central Nassau Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Womens Club; Assemblywoman Earlene Hoopers Historian Service Award; Hempstead Branch of the NAACPs Political Action Award; Hempstead High Schools Community Trailblazer Award; Alpha Phi Alpha, Eta Theta Lambda Chapters 2000 Community Service Award; League of Women Voters of Nassau Countys Certificate of Honor; African American Black History Associations Political Woman of the New Millennium...2000; Marshall Elementary Schools American History Celebration 2000 Heroine Award; Faith Baptist Churchs Martin Luther King Award; The Nassau County Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. Local 830 Unity Committees Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Outstanding Service; Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthys First Ever Citizen of the Month in the Fourth Congressional Certificate of Recognition Award in January 2000. She earned Certificate of Recognition Awards from three outstanding organizations: the Association of Black Women in Higher Education Nassau Community College, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Sigma Beta Beta Chapter of Westbury and the Coalition for Community Well-Being. She received the Woman in Government Award from Women on the Job, Woman of the Year Award from the Commitment Praise Ensemble, the First Annual Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Awards Jubilee from the Harriet Tubman March 10 Coalition. Governor Pataki honored her with the Governors 2001 Award for Excellence. In 2001, Councilwoman Goosby received the Angel Award from United Males Organization, the Outstanding Service Award from the Nassau County Guardians Association, Inc. and an Appreciation Award from the Nassau Black Bar Association. During 2002, she received appreciation awards from the HERSTORY Program, a project of Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition and the N.A.B.S.E. Grace Womens Services, Inc.s Marion Harris Award and she received recognition from the NCA Coats for Kids, the Frederick Douglass Noah Founders Award, Hofstra University and the New York Chapter of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Alumni Association. Soroptismist International of Nassau County named her the 1996 Woman of Distinction. Zeta Phi Beta Sororitys Community Woman of the Year in 1998, has been honored as the keynote speaker as a young girl in Applachicola, Florida.
As a distinguished public servant, Councilwoman Goosbys political activity was chronicled in the New York Times, Newsday, the Amsterdam News and other publications. Her work was documented on several television media outlets including ABC, CBS and NBC in the greater New York area and Long Islands Channel 12 News.
A long-time advocate and supporter of children and youth programs, Councilwoman Goosby is an adult member of the Girl Scouts and serves on organizations Circle of Friends and has served on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. She is a former Vice President of Hempstead High School Board, former President of Hempsteads United Parents Association and retired President to Marshall Schools Parent Teacher Association.
Councilwoman Goosby serves on the Board of Directors of Hempstead High School Scholarship Fund, Inc. as an Executive Board Member of the Parish Resource Center. Her professional affiliations include the American Dietetic Association, New York State and Long Island Dietetic Association, Consultant Dietitians of Long Island and Science Teachers Association of New York, Inc.
Dorothy L. Goosby received her Masters in Business Administration in Labor Relations/Corporate Finance and Accounting Management from Adelphi University and is an alumnus of Florida A&M University. She currently is a graduate student at Hofstra University. She resides in Hempstead, New York with her husband, Anderson Jay" Goosby. They have two daughters, Alcina and Cassandra. Mrs. Goosby is a member of Union Baptist Church where she serves on the Social Action Committee, past President of the Senior Choir and Co-Chair of the Womans Day Committee.
The First Councilmatic District of the Town of Hempstead includes Hempstead, Lakeview, Roosevelt, Uniondale, West Hempstead and portions of Freeport, Rockville Centre, Westbury and Garden City.
