Settlement Reached In Casino Racial Discrimination Case

Agreement Reached Between Sams Town and African-American Cashier

Las Vegas, September 30, 2003: A confidential settlement has been reached in an employment discrimination lawsuit filed by Fania Brown, an African-American cashier, against Las Vegas casino Sams Town. Brown had been suing Sams Town for injuries she says she has suffered as a result of a continual racial harassment and discrimination while working at Sams Town over the past decade.

Prior to the settlement, United States District Court Judge Kent Dawson had denied a motion to dismiss or, in the alternative for summary judgment filed by Sams Town. In his 18-page decision, the judge also denied numerous other motions by Sams Town seeking not only immediate judgment against Brown, but also asking the court to strike the briefs of her out-of-state counsel.

Anthony Luti, Browns attorney, commended Sams Town for its willingness to develop and reach a mutually agreeable settlement. Although this is a settlement and not a jury verdict, it still highlights the fact that discrimination on the basis of race should never be condoned, particularly in the workplace. Ms. Brown lauds Sams Town for stepping up to the plate." The terms of the settlement remain confidential.

Mr. Luti is available to comment on this matter and can be reached at (323) 960-2600.
