The Firkin Group of Pubs Fires Up U.S. Expansion

Firkin chain of pubs aims to dominate the Authentic English Pub segment by putting over 100 new pubs into development within the next three years through a partnership with Fransmart

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) October 3, 2003 -The Firkin Group of Pubs, a 40-unit chain of authentic English pubs has formed a joint venture with Fransmart to rapidly expand throughout North America. Firkin, which aims to dominate the English pub segment, has already sparked interest from several current Fransmart-portfolio franchisees.

The concept of an English style pub is untapped in the U.S. market and has a great mass appeal," says Larry Isaacs, Director of Marketing for the Firkin Group of Pubs. Weve decided to partner with Fransmart because of their expertise in the restaurant business and knowledge of local markets. We will work closely with Fransmart to build and ensure the quality of the Firkin brand while overseeing the US expansion."

In Canada alone, The Firkin Pub chain generates almost $50 million (USD) in system wide sales and thinks it can grow to a $250-$300 million (USD) chain throughout North America within 5 years. Average unit volumes are approximately $1.5 million and each pub serves approximately 50-60% alcohol. Firkin pubs average 3,000 -- 5,000 square feet and seat 80-150 guests and also have pool, darts and video games.

Ive wanted to be in the pub segment for several years because, while restaurant fads come and go, the pub concept is timeless and will only be enhanced with a quality food component such as the one at Firkin," says Dan Rowe, CEO of Fransmart. The start up costs are much lower than many other restaurant concepts and there is little direct competition for Firkin. We do not need the triple A locations or the rents associated with them and we can convert existing restaurant and bar space whenever possible. Above all, this business is a blast to own and operate."
Stanley Adelson and Ian Fisher opened the first pub, Fox and Firkin, in Toronto in May 1987. It was the idea of a traditional English neighborhood pub -- where people could enjoy good drink and food in good company -- that quickly built a stable of regulars. Forty pubs later, Firkin remains the place where patrons are able to sit back and relax Firkin style" while enjoying the ambiance and the superior, yet affordable, menu. Selections range from a variety of beverages and delicious meals including: traditional English pub fair like fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches, as well as a selection of entrée dishes such as New York strip steak, roasted chicken, fresh fish and salads and-of course-a wide assortment of draft beers on tap and in the bottle.
